1st Braughing Cheetah and Puma Cub Packs held a Dad and Cub weekend at Phasels Wood Scout Camp and Activity Centre near Hemel Hempstead. The theme for the weekend was Captain Scarlett/The Clangers, so all activities were linked to 'space'.
The weekend began with 'touchdown' when the Cubs/Dads arrived. Tent pitching turned out to provide some unexpected entertainment for the Leaders, so thanks to some of the Dads for that! :-)
After a briefing from Colonel White (Akela Derek) during which the Cubs/Dads were split into teams 'Atlantis' and 'Enterprise' (with the Leader team 'Cloudbase'), it was time for a wide game to raise 'mission funds'. We then had snacks and drinks before settling down to watch an episode of Captain Scarlett... the Dads seemed to enjoy the nostalgia! Ken set up his telescope for us to all look at Saturn, its rings and moons. It was then time for the Cubs to go into 'cryogenic preservation' (bedtime) while some of the Dads and leaders did their own 'refuelling' while sat around the campfire. :-)
On Saturday, the Cubs/Dads cooked their own breakfast (and all of their meals) on an alter fire, and then it was time to start the day's missions which included 'crater exploration' (crab football - video below), 'lunar marathon' (non-stop cricket), 'hunt the Clangers' (pot-holing), and 'evacuate Cloudbase' (abseiling). Points were won (and also lost!) by the teams for their effort and performance during these missions. The teams also had to build 'replicators' (cardboard ovens) and use them to bake yummy chocolate cakes to have after dinner... unlike some previous camps, both cakes turned out beautifully and the Cubs (and Dads?!) had fun decorating them. The Leaders dressed up for dinner as Captain Scarlett characters, which earned team Cloudbase loads of points for making the effort - it also earned a few funny looks from the Dads, but the Cubs didn't bat an eyelid as they are used to their Leaders looking strange! :-) After dinner, we gatherd around the campfire to sing some Cub songs and perform some funny sketches many of which used unsuspecting Dads as the 'victims'. :-)
On Sunday we completed some more missions, we 'hunted the clangers' (Binoculars Kim's game) and 'drove the SPV/Launched all angles' (cresta run karts and pedal racers). We then had lunch, packed up camp (just before the rain came!) had our mission debrief (points were very close :) and headed back to Earth with a bump....some VERY tired Cubs, Dads and Leaders!
Thanks to all Dad and Cubs for taking part - a great weekend, we hope you all enjoyed. Well done to Simon and Ken who organised the camp as part of their nights away permit.
